CPS Energy has become a founding member of the Texas Nuclear Alliance and is also the alliance’s first electric utility provider member. CPS Energy owns 40 percent of the two-unit South Texas Project nuclear power plant, in Bay City, Tex.
CPS Energy: Established in 1860, CPS Energy is the nation’s largest public power, natural gas, and electric company, providing service to more than 930,114 electric and 381,379 natural gas customers in San Antonio, Tex., and portions of seven adjoining counties.
Alliance formation: The Texas Nuclear Alliance is an industry association dedicated to the advancement of nuclear technology in the state. It was formed with a singular mission, according to a May 29 press release: to make Texas the “Nuclear Capital of the World.”
Formed in 2022 in the aftermath of Winter Storm Uri that hit Texas, the alliance is based “on the fundamental premise that if Texas and the world want low-carbon, reliable energy, it can no longer turn its back on nuclear energy. Nuclear is clean, safe, reliable, and secure,” the press release noted.
